Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge - #25, 26, 27 & 28

Pen used:  Sharpie Ultra Fine Point black permanent marker

 . . . . .

The Doodlewash adventure is almost over.

World Watercolor Month over at the Doodlewash site begins in July, two days from now (still cannot believe the year is half over).   I won't be joining them because I want to spend more time in my little garden, but head over there and check it out if you are so inclined.

Speaking of gardens, I snapped a few photos of the cool scarecrows at Luscher Farms near Portland a few days ago.

I hope they make you smile.

This photo collage of Luscher Farms is a few years old.

And that is it from the Lally house for now.
Hope to see you in a few days.

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge - #21, 22, 23 & 24

Summer is heating up and so is the schedule.
Between cat sitting for friends and a trip to Portland
to rendezvous with a traveling relative, we've been busy,
so I'm glad the challenge is almost over.

One of the highlights of the last few days was introducing Tim's aunt
to Luscher Farms in Lake Oswego (just outside of Portland).

Luscher Farms offers 180 plots or allotments to locals who are passionate about organic gardening.  From veggies to gorgeous flowers, gardeners plant just about everything.

And then there is the scarecrow competition.

Here is an example.
I'll add a few more during the week.

Is June almost over already?

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge - #19 & 20

#19 - Pear

A quick painting of a pear was the plan, but the pear kept getting bigger and bigger...
Out came the gouache to try to fix this.

I got started with white gouache where the pear meets the table on the right side.

Then I headed over to the left side and really started messing it up.

Finally, I decided to let go of my control issues, walk away, & call it a day.

#20 - Flower

Figured I would sketch this one out to prevent it from "growing,"
but it started to slip away, too.
It felt good to let it go...

Tomorrow is another day :}

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge - #16, 17 & 18

#16 - Birdwatching

#17 - Birdwatching

#18 - Birdwatching

We've love watching the birds in the backyard, but lately they have been watching us.

Last week, a fledgling (a young crow with no street smarts)
made the mistake of landing in the yard near our dog Cobie.

For a moment, Cobie forgot that he is an old man and sprang into action.
The young crow froze.

Cobie grabbed the crow, but was so shocked he caught the bird
 that he immediately dropped it.
Thankfully, the crow made good his escape.

The young crow's clan was not amused.
They are still quite vocal whenever Cobie goes outside.

Cobie, however, is immune to their outrage, insults and taunts.
He is quite deaf.

Here's to happy endings.

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge - #14 & 15

#14 - Visit China

#15 - Visit Russia

The first half of the challenge has flown by.

I had hoped to post some inks from class, but the technique is not as easy as it looks.
No surprise there...
Good thing I ordered lots of Yupo.

In the words of Brian Lies, one of my favorite illustrators,
 "Practice makes better."

Have a safe, happy weekend.

Hope to see you on Monday.

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge - #12 & 13

#12 - Camping

#13 - Safari photoshoot

It's hard to believe this challenge is almost half over.

But Charlie O'Shields over at is sponsoring
another watercolor challenge for July called
in case you're interested.

Looks like a great way to connect with other artists around the globe.

#10 - Pineapple

#11 - Strawberry

These three paintings are based on challenge prompts.

My 14 year old puppy is a little under the weather today.
Off to the vet.

. . . . . .

Back from vet.  Cobie is okay.
He is just old....

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge #7 & 8

#7 - Growing flowers

#8 - Picking flowers

. . . . . . .

More Yupo arrived yesterday, and I picked up the canned air, but one item is still missing.

Ink spread using a straw

It appears that the Tim Holtz company is having some production problems with a few of the ink products.  One very specific item is needed for the online class.
I eventually found it & placed an order, but it hasn't arrived yet.

In the meantime, we now have 250 sheets of Yupo.
The price averaged out to 50 cents per sheet (including shipping) which is usually cheaper than buying Yupo on individual pads.

The online study has over 60 videos / 9 hours of instruction, so I hope to spend more time in class over the next few days.  There is also lifetime access to the videos - nice.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Doodlewash June 2018 Art Challenge #5-6

#5 - Balloons

#6 - Shadow Play

. . . . . . .

Alexis Bonavitacola's alcohol ink class has lots of great instruction.
I was hoping to try a few floral inks using her techniques,
but forgot to buy canned air.
I'm off to get some.

Hope to see you in a few days.

Doodlewash June 2018 Challenge (Outdoor Fun) - #2, #3, #4

A good thing about the challenge is that it is a lot less stressful than creating a finished painting a day.

The hard thing about the challenge is walking away
from something that isn't finished.

Anyhow, here are the last few watercolor sketches.

#2 - playing basketball

#3 - playing tennis

#4 - running barefoot in the grass

Blogging buddy Jennifer Rose Philip over at FuzzyDragons is doodle washing, too,
but with a different twist.  I think she's enjoying it.

. . . . .

Today begins the online "Florals in Bloom" alcohol ink workshop with
 Alexis Bonavitacola.

Some of Alexis' work is featured at Fine Art America.

I feel the need
 for more supplies :}

I'm heading over to class.

Hope to see you in a few days.

Doodlewash June 2018 Challenge / 30 Watercolor Sketches in 30 Days

The theme for the June 2018 doodlewash challenge is "outdoor fun."
The use of painting prompts is optional.

The first prompt is "sunshine."
There's nothing I like better than catching a glimpse of a furry friend sitting outside
in the warm morning sun.

After the watercolor was finished, I realized this sketch was not really
what outdoor "fun" is about, but
the cat brought this to mind:

Then the hat brought this to mind:

"Look at me.
Look at me.
Look at me NOW.
It is fun to have fun
But you have to know how."
Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat

That's stretching it a little, I know.

Will be back on Monday with the next three challenge sketches
 (or that's the plan).

Have a wonderful weekend!
